On November 6th, the 2022 BRICS Skills Competition was successfully concluded at the Xiamen International Convention and Exhibition Center. The final of the BRICS Skills Competition consisted of 26 events, and featured 2,500 contestants from nearly 1,600 teams, both Chinese and foreign. The final was held in the form of an online competition for the foreign contestants and an offline competition for the local students.
Under the guidance of teachers Chen Guangwei and Yang Chenfei from the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, our participating team of Wang Zhixiang and Wang Jingbo took part in the offline final of the augmented and virtual reality competition. This event was kept in line with international standards, using an English language software development environment and an English task book. The competition was divided into the four modules of modeling, rendering, VR cognitive function development, and operational function development. After three intensive 11-hour competitions held over two days, our team stood out among all 58 teams (32 domestic and 26 foreign), and was awarded first national prize, coming second in the international ranking. In this way, we won an international silver medal and made an important breakthrough in the BRICS Skills Competition.
This competition was strongly supported by school leaders and relevant functional departments. As a result of the pandemic, transportation issues, and other adverse factors, the competition underwent numerous twists and turns. However, thanks to the coordination and joint efforts of the various parties, we were able to enjoy this valuable opportunity and participate in the event. During the whole process of preparation and competition, participants worked day and night, preparing for the competition and studying hard. They did not yield to setbacks, and were able to showcase their outstanding technical skills, good spirit and physical qualities, as well as their professional accomplishments.
The BRICS Skills Competition was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Education of the PRC, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of the PRC, the BRICS Business Council, and the Xiamen Municipal People's Government. The competition is focused on intelligent manufacturing, the digital economy, new industries, new forms of business and new technologies. More than 20 categories were created, including augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence robotic system integration and applications, and the industrial Internet, in order to build an international exchange platform for technical skills. In this way, the competition promotes learning, training and reformation by means of competition, thus strengthening the abilities of teachers and students from the five countries to innovate, coordinate, organize and cooperate. This will lead to further exchanges and cooperation between vocational colleges and enterprises in the five countries, and promote the fostering of international high-quality talents in the BRICS countries.
